Ginger from North Sumatra Ginger is ready to penetrate the export market in the United States.

VIVA Medan – In the near future, fresh ginger from North Sumatra will penetrate the United States (US) market. The estimated export value is set to reach $210,000 US dollars. The export of ginger has already complied with the strict standards set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This was revealed during the signing of a contract between PT Toba Barika Borneo and PT Alpha Gemilang Sejahtera, witnessed by the Governor of North Sumatra, Edy Rahmayadi, on the 10th floor of the North Sumatra Governor’s Office in Medan on Friday, May 26, 2023.

The Chairman of the Association of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) of North Sumatra, the owner of PT Alpha Gemilang Sejahtera, Ujiana Sianturi, stated that the highest quality ginger from North Sumatra has made its debut in the international market, namely the United States of America.

“This event marks the signing of a contract between PT Toba Barika Borneo and PT Alpha Gemilang Sejahtera through the Association of UMKM of North Sumatra for the export of ginger to enter the American market,” said Ujiana to reporters after the signing of the contract.

The signing of this contract is part of the 9th Sumatra Innovation and Investment Week in 2023. Ujiana further explained that it is very difficult and not easy to penetrate the export market in the United States.

“When entering the American market, it is very difficult; we had to go through a lengthy administrative process. So, the exporter already had successful suppliers from North Sumatra. Therefore, ginger from Indonesia is the first to enter the American market,” Ujiana said.

Ujiana revealed that the plan is to export a total of 60 tons of ginger from North Sumatra to the United States, two months from now. This ginger is cultivated in the districts of Simalungun, Deliserdang, Karo, Samosir, and Toba.

“It’s a two-month process, full of struggles, and we have to follow the designated procedures all the way to America. Currently, we have sufficient stock. We must meet the export standards to enter the American market,” explained Ujiana.

With this, Ujiana hopes for support from the North Sumatra Provincial Government. This collaboration between the government, business players, farmers, and exporters is crucial to ensure that the agricultural products from North Sumatra continue to attract international markets.

“In the future, we need support from the government and business players. We need to collaborate, and here the exporters are millennials who are enthusiastic and embrace digital systems,” Ujiana emphasized.

Muhammad Alfan, the Chief Sustainability Officer of PT Toba Barika Borneo, revealed that to enter the American market, businesses are guided and mentored by professional experts in their fields.

“In addition to ginger, we will also produce honey ginger, in line with our herbal motto. The honey ginger will be packaged in glass bottles. Our products will expand to other countries,” explained Alfan.

Meanwhile, Faisal Arif Nasution, the Head of the Investment and Integrated One-Stop Service Agency of North Sumatra, who also witnessed the signing of the contract, stated that the North Sumatra Provincial Government continues to promote the agricultural products from North Sumatra and aims to penetrate international markets.

“This is a good moment for all of us. The agricultural sector in North Sumatra has great potential. Moreover, we know that this is an integral part of how we can realize investments in North Sumatra across all sectors,” said Faisal.

Accompanied by the Deputy Regent of Simalungun, Zonny Waldi, Faisal stated that the North Sumatra Provincial Government has set a target of achieving around IDR 50 trillion in investments in North Sumatra in 2023.

“Of course, our enthusiasm lies in building synergy to provide guidance, not only to large-scale businesses but also to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) to become independent and elevate their status,” explained Faisal.

Faisal mentioned that the North Sumatra Provincial Government continues to provide sustainable guidance and support to UMKM and aims to enhance agricultural production with good market competitiveness, targeting global demand.

“What we are currently doing is conducting continuous guidance through the North Sumatra Provincial Government, engaging in ongoing communication with regencies/cities to empower UMKM and help them progress,” elaborated Faisal.
